The grounds of Raby Castle will be transformed into an immersive experience like no other with “The Glittering North,” now open for ticket bookings on select dates throughout October and early November.
This raucous event celebrates the region’s Norse and Viking heritage, bringing iconic figures from the past to life with mesmerizing puppetry and stunning light displays. Meet Gullinbursti, the golden-bristled boar that lights up the sky, and Sleipnir, the giant eight-legged horse, as visitors of all ages mingle with these magical creatures and enjoy tales of folklore and myth.
The newly remodeled 18th-century Walled Garden will host the ‘Trail of the North,’ featuring illuminated photo opportunities, a glittering space dripping with gold, giant illuminated fish in a new aquatic world, and a breathtaking recreation of the northern lights.
Sophie Brown, Sales and Events Manager at Raby Estate, says, “The transition from summer to autumn marks the beginning of cozy nights, with hands wrapped around mugs of hot chocolate, fiery red and orange leaves underfoot, and the warm glow of autumn. Our new event is an atmospheric celebration of the season, filled with festoon lights, feasting, torchlight, and fire processions designed to ignite the imagination in a way never seen before in County Durham.”
Beyond the trail, the Dutch Barn will be adorned with lights, flags, and bunting. Folk musicians playing fiddles and brass will set a lively tone, while fire performers dazzle the crowds with their skills. The Riding School will also be transformed into a mythical space with warm lighting, where visitors can settle in for stories of Norse gods and shape-shifting beasts.
Explore this unique experience at your own pace, weaving through immersive gardens and towering heritage buildings, and get up close to the enchanting characters of The Glittering North. The new Vinery café restaurant will be open throughout the evening, offering delicious food and warm drinks, while the new retail space in the Coach House will feature a selection of high-quality, artisan items, perfect for autumn and Christmas shopping.
This event promises a carnival of fun-filled adventure with plenty of hot chocolate and marshmallows, sure to delight visitors of all ages.
