Step Back in Time with a Ride on the Iconic 1938 Tube Train

This summer, passengers can relive the golden age of the London Underground aboard a beautifully restored 1938 Tube train. As part of the TfL25 and Railway 200 celebrations, the London Transport Museum is offering a special series of heritage journeys along the Piccadilly line, with a range of routes running across the weekend.

On Friday 11 July, journeys will begin at Northfields and loop around Heathrow before returning. Saturday 12 July sees the train travelling from Acton Town to Uxbridge and back. Then on Sunday 13 July, passengers can enjoy a one-way journey either from Ealing Broadway to Cockfosters via central London, or from Cockfosters back to Ealing Broadway.

Whether you’re a family looking for a memorable day out, a vintage enthusiast, or a lifelong transport fan, the experience promises a nostalgic and entertaining outing. Visitors can collect a souvenir flyer or family activity sheet, and browse the London Transport Museum Friends stall for transport memorabilia.

As the train travels the Piccadilly line, passengers will pass several examples of striking 1930s modernist architecture designed by Charles Holden, the celebrated architect responsible for many of the line’s outer stations during its expansion. Highlights include Northfields, Acton Town and Cockfosters, as well as the likes of Arnos Grove, Southgate and Sudbury Town.

This year marks the 150th anniversary of Holden’s birth. To celebrate, an actor portraying Holden will appear at stations throughout the weekend, sharing stories about his life, career and lasting influence on the look of London Underground during its golden era.

Journey options include:

  •  Friday 11 July:      Northfields – the Heathrow Loop – Northfields (return)

  •  Saturday 12 July:  Acton Town – Uxbridge – Acton Town (return)

  •  Sunday 13 July:    Ealing Broadway – Cockfosters (single)

Elizabeth McKay, CEO and Director for London Transport Museum, said: ‘Come and join us on our wonderfully restored 1938 Art deco-style train this summer. Step aboard and experience the joyful nostalgia of riding the rails of one of the capital’s much-loved transport relics as we celebrate 25 years of TfL and 200 years of train travel. Tickets must be bought in advance so make sure you don’t miss out on this thrilling day out.’

Claire Mann, Chief Operating Officer at TfL, said: ‘It has been a great year of celebrations so far, and these heritage train journeys as part of TfL 25 and 200 years of train travel in UK, not only allow customers to take a step back in time but also feel the change in train travel during the last century. We hope those attending enjoy the day and we look forward to hosting more celebratory events during the remainder of the year.’

About the 1938 Tube stock

The 1938 Stock was the first kind of Tube train to have all the electrical equipment underneath the floor, combining the latest technology of the era with quintessential late 1930s style. These trains served London, on several deep-level Tube lines, for half a century. The 1938 stock was one of the capital’s longest serving Tube trains.

The beautifully restored electrified train is made up of four cars complete with green and red moquette seating, grab handles and distinctive Art deco light fittings. London Transport Museum offers the only opportunity to travel on a heritage train on London Underground.
