Women Leading the Charge in Kynren's Jousting

Henry VIII may once have declared that women were not to joust - but try telling that to the team behind Kynren - An Epic Tale of England.
While audiences may expect the high-octane jousting scenes in this outdoor spectacular to be performed by men, they’re in for a surprise. Lift the helmets of Kynren’s nine jousters, and you’ll find that five of them are women – proving that grit, speed and precision in the saddle are not limited by gender.
These riders, ranging in age from their early 20s to mid-40s, are part of a talented and fearless all-female horse-riding team, determined to defy expectations. Whether charging down the jousting track or performing daring stunts, they’re showing that women are more than up to the challenge.
Anna Warnecke, CEO of Kynren, also volunteers as one of the show’s jousters. She explains: “People often assume these stunts – which involve speed and serious impact – must be done by men. But here in the North East, we’ve got incredibly dedicated women who train hard and perform just as fearlessly.”
Many of the female riders have been part of the production since its launch, training on-site at Bishop Auckland. All share a deep passion for horses, which are cared for year-round by Kynren’s experienced cavalry team.
The spirit of powerful women is central to the show. Boudicca, the iconic British queen who led a revolt against Roman rule, is portrayed by Laurie Robinson – who also directs the cavalry and estates at Kynren and, like Anna, performs in the jousting scenes.
Laurie said: “People often say ‘wow’ when they realise most of our jousters are women. They can’t believe it because of how fast and powerfully we ride. It’s rewarding to shift that perception.”
She added: “So much of history was written by men in power, focused on men’s stories. It’s exciting to bring characters like Boudicca to life and show what women are capable of.”
Throughout Kynren, the female riders appear in numerous scenes – from medieval battles to royal courts – helping to bring Britain’s tumultuous history to life through thrilling horse stunts, fiery rides, and even a dramatic horse-dragging stunt across the vast seven-and-a-half-acre stage.
With women making up 69% of Kynren’s volunteer team and a female CEO at the helm, the production is sending a powerful message: gender doesn’t define talent or leadership. It’s an inspiring example for the next generation.
Kynren is rated 5 stars on Tripadvisor and is widely praised for its scale, technical brilliance, and emotional power. From the stunning costumes and epic set pieces to the jaw-dropping stunts, it’s one of the UK's most spectacular live events.
