Visit the North Yorkshire Moors Railway for its
‘Big 50’ bucket list: 50 things to see and do this summer

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) has put together the ultimate heritage railway bucket list for visitors to tackle this summer featuring a range of activities that best suit you and your group.

The bucket list of 50 items is to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Britain’s most popular heritage railway, which welcomes over 300,000 visitors every year. The list aims to encourage groups to make the most of their journey and explore the whole of the heritage railway. What better way to do this than by the NYMR’s ‘Big 50’ bucket list of things to do, see and explore during a trip to the iconic Yorkshire attraction? Plus, every visit helps to keep the NYMR on track for future golden years.

This summer, when groups visit the UK’s most loved railway, they can become a ‘Top Fan’ and earn their very own badge by completing 10 out of 50 of the bucket list items. Better yet, complete all 50 and become a ‘Super Fan’, with its own special badge. The ‘Big 50’ booklet can be collected from any NYMR booking office, and taken to a station shop once completed to claim a Top Fan or Super Fan badge.

Whilst on board, take in the breath-taking scenery of the North York Moors National Park, including Goathland railway station, known as a filming location for the iconic Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The NYMR has also recently been used as a location for the latest films in the Mission: Impossible and Indiana Jones franchises.

  • Have a chat with one of the NYMR volunteers - some of them have been with us since the start in 1973 so they have lots of great stories to tell!

  • Visit ‘Hogsmeade’ - aka Goathland station, which doubled as the train stop for Hogwarts in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

  • Enjoy traditional fish and chips in Whitby

  • During a visit to the heritage railway, groups can explore the heritage stations and engine sheds to see how the engineers maintain and conserve the locomotives and can treat themselves to a delicious afternoon tea at one of the tea rooms at Pickering, Goathland, or Grosmont.

Group bookings must be pre-booked in advance by calling 01751 477700 or emailing grouptravel@nymr.co.uk. Drop Off/Pick Up Point is station dependent - please contact for full details.
