Jodrell Bank: Where Wisdom Meets Wonder

Ever imagined what it’s like to journey into space? You won’t need a rocket to experience it. Set amid the picturesque Cheshire countryside on the edge of North Wales, the Jodrell Bank Centre for Engagement brings the wonders of the Universe within easy reach. As home to the UK’s largest radio telescope and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it offers an inspiring gateway to the cosmos in the heart of the Northwest.

The first sight to greet visitors is the iconic Lovell Telescope - a monumental 76-metre dish that has been observing the skies since 1957.

This Grade I listed structure has contributed to some of humanity’s most remarkable space endeavours, from following Sputnik’s pioneering orbit to supporting the Apollo Moon landings. A symbol of British scientific achievement, it remains an active part of cutting-edge research today.

But the telescope is just the beginning. Guests can dive into big science across four immersive pavilions, explore hands-on exhibitions, discover captivating Space Dome films, or simply relax with tea and cake while taking in breathtaking views. There’s truly something for every kind of visitor.

From 24 January to 29 March, groups will also have the chance to see Cosmic Threads - a remarkable community quilt created to celebrate Jodrell Bank’s 80th anniversary.

Designed in collaboration with UK textile artist Anne Kelly, the quilt brings together more than 200 hand-stitched squares crafted by members of the public, each piece reflecting what Jodrell Bank means to them. Together, they create a rich visual tapestry of shared memories, scientific milestones, and celestial creativity.

Visitors can further enrich their experience by attending one of the expert-led Heritage Talks, choosing between two engaging themes: 'Radar to Quasars: The Story of Jodrell Bank', which delves into the history of the Lovell Telescope, or 'Jodrell Bank and the Space Race', exploring its pivotal role during Cold War space activity.

More than just an observatory, Jodrell Bank is a place where science, culture, and imagination meet. With two locally stocked cafés, peaceful picnic areas, and abundant wildlife, it offers an unforgettable day out for groups looking to experience one of the Northwest’s most unique destinations.

Adult groups of 10 or more can enjoy additional perks, including food and drink vouchers for coach drivers and a complimentary ticket for the group organiser.
