Our photograph catches the stones at perhaps their most atmospheric. The sun is sinking across Salisbury Plain, turning the horizon orange and gold, while the great stones stand in silhouette against the evening sky. It’s a reminder that whatever Stonehenge meant to the people who created it thousands of years ago, its ability to stop you in your tracks hasn’t diminished.
Managed by English Heritage, Stonehenge is far more than the famous stone circle. Groups can explore the exhibition and its fascinating collection of archaeological finds, visit the reconstructed Neolithic houses and discover the wider prehistoric landscape. A fast-track shuttle takes groups from the coach park towards the Stone Circle, while the visitor centre includes a café and shop. Allow around two hours for a comfortable visit.
Good news for groups: organised groups of 15 or more paying visitors receive 10% off standard admission when paying together. One tour leader and one coach driver are also admitted free.
