A deliciously different Christmas arrives in the Lake District
Christmas is full of traditions, but every so often a new one comes along that feels as though it has always belonged. This winter, the Lake District welcomes just such an event as the inaugural Gingerbread House Festival makes its debut at the beautiful Low Wood Bay Resort & Spa on the shores of Windermere.
Inspired by the timeless tale of Hansel and Gretel, where a magical cottage built from gingerbread, cakes and sugar captured imaginations for generations, the three-day festival celebrates creativity, community and the unmistakable aroma of Christmas baking. Best of all, admission is completely free, making it an appealing addition to any festive itinerary.
The idea has been conceived by Joanne Hunter of the world-famous Grasmere Gingerbread®, and visitors can expect an extraordinary display of handcrafted gingerbread houses created by schools, families, local businesses, professional bakers and talented confectioners. Each creation promises its own unique personality, from traditional festive cottages to imaginative edible masterpieces, offering plenty to admire throughout the weekend.
The festivities begin on Friday 20 November with the Low Wood Bay Resort & Spa Christmas Lights Switch-On, a magical occasion made even more memorable by the arrival of Father Christmas as he sails across Windermere by boat. It provides a wonderfully atmospheric opening to what promises to become one of the Lake District's most distinctive seasonal celebrations.
Throughout the weekend there is far more to enjoy than the gingerbread displays alone. Visitors can browse the festival exhibits, discover the winning entries in a range of special categories, enjoy live seasonal entertainment, watch festive cookery demonstrations, listen to traditional Christmas storytelling and take part in hands-on craft workshops suitable for all ages. Together, they create a relaxed festive atmosphere that encourages visitors to linger and soak up the spirit of the season.
Adding further warmth to the occasion, the festival will raise funds for Shelter, supporting the charity's work helping people facing housing difficulties and homelessness.
