The Spirit of Kynren: A Decade of Impact and an Ambitious Vision for the Future

Kynren - An Epic Tale of England is celebrating its 10th anniversary with the release of a landmark report that highlights the extraordinary social and economic impact the show has made across the North East – and reveals exciting plans for the future.

Since its debut in Bishop Auckland, Kynren has drawn more than 430,000 visitors and injected an impressive £65.5 million into the local economy. As the 2025 season prepares to launch on Saturday 19th July, the new 30-page report confirms the show’s role as a powerful catalyst for regional growth, community development, and cultural pride.

A Decade of Achievement

The report reveals significant milestones over the last 10 years:

  • £65.5 million boost to the North East economy since 2016

  • Over 430,000 visitors to date

  • 146 jobs created through the production

  • 95% of last season’s volunteers are returning in 2025

Anna Warnecke, CEO of Kynren, said:
“From the beginning, we’ve seen Kynren change lives – not only through the spectacle on stage but through the opportunities, skills, and community spirit it inspires. This report brings that impact into focus. It’s a proud moment, and it’s just the beginning. The future is even more ambitious.”

Power of the Volunteers

Central to Kynren’s success is its volunteer programme – one of the largest of its kind in the UK. Over 1,000 dedicated volunteers, affectionately called “Archers,” contribute more than 175,000 hours each year. The programme builds confidence, boosts wellbeing, and brings people together across generations.

Recent survey results show:

  • 95% of volunteers gained valuable new skills

  • 94% reported increased happiness and confidence

  • 81% felt less isolated

  • 80% experienced improved physical health

One volunteer shared:
“I had lost my confidence but since joining Kynren I feel like I can breathe again. I feel accepted for being me in Kynren – it’s such a great place to be.”

Volunteer experiences often translate into new opportunities, with more than 17% of participants securing better jobs thanks to skills gained through Kynren. Youth programmes and college partnerships further support personal development and career readiness.

Looking Ahead: Kynren – The Storied Lands

The next chapter begins in 2026 with the launch of Kynren – The Storied Lands, the UK’s first historical theme park. Set across 150 acres of stunning landscaped grounds, this new daytime attraction will feature five spectacular shows and immersive environments, extending Kynren’s legacy in bold new ways.

Forecasts for the expansion include:

  • 3.3 million additional visitors over the next five years

  • £196.5 million in added economic impact by 2030

  • 814 new jobs created across the region, including 345 at the new park

Jonathan Ruffer, founder of Kynren and the charitable organisation behind it, said:
“Kynren has already shown its power to spark transformation. With The Storied Lands, we’re building something truly world-class – an attraction that will put the North East on the global map, drive economic growth, and create memories for generations to come.”

A Sustainable Legacy

Kynren is also committed to environmental stewardship. Developed on the site of a disused golf course, the grounds now support thriving habitats, including hedgerows, woodlands, and wildlife corridors for native species such as bats, birds of prey and songbirds.
