Hope Mill Theatre is thrilled to announce that Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein: The Musical will receive its regional premiere from 10 October to 30 November 2025, with a press night on 15 October. The production will be directed and choreographed by Nick Winston.

Adapted by Mel Brooks from his iconic 1974 film starring Gene Wilder, Young Frankenstein follows Frederick Frankenstein (pronounced "Fronk-en-steen"), the grandson of the infamous Victor Frankenstein. Upon inheriting his family’s estate in Transylvania, Frederick—despite his initial reluctance—finds himself drawn into the world of his grandfather’s experiments. With the help of his hunchbacked assistant, Igor ("Eye-gore"), and the ever-charming lab assistant, Inga, he brings a new creature to life—only for the monster to escape, leading to a series of comedic misadventures.

Casting details will be announced in due course.

Director and choreographer Nick Winston returns to Hope Mill Theatre following his acclaimed productions of Mame in 2019 and, more recently, Burlesque: The Musical at Manchester’s Opera House.

Speaking about the opportunity to direct Young Frankenstein, he said:

“I am beyond excited to bring this uproarious musical comedy, based on Mel Brooks’ classic film, to the brilliant Hope Mill Theatre. The intimacy of this venue combined with Brooks' unmistakable humour and the musical’s fantastic score will create the perfect mix of laughter, love, and a little bit of mad science!”

This production also marks a major milestone for Hope Mill Theatre as it celebrates its 10th anniversary. Founded in October 2015 by Joseph Houston and William Whelton, the award-winning venue has gained both national and international recognition for its high-quality in-house musical productions.

Reflecting on the anniversary, co-founder and CEO William Whelton said:

Young Frankenstein is the perfect way to mark our 10th anniversary, and in true Hope Mill style, we are proud to be presenting a regional premiere of this beloved Mel Brooks musical. Since opening, we have always aimed to bring the best musical theatre titles and talent to Manchester, and we are thrilled to welcome Nick Winston back to the venue after his work on Mame in 2019. When Joe and I first started this journey, we could never have imagined reaching this milestone. We are incredibly grateful for the past decade and excited for what the future holds. This production is just the beginning of many exciting announcements to come as we continue to secure the legacy of Hope Mill Theatre.”

A treat for both long-time fans of the film and those experiencing it for the first time, Young Frankenstein brings all the charm and panache of the original screen sensation with an added theatrical flair. Featuring unforgettable songs such as The Transylvania Mania, He Vas My Boyfriend, and Irving Berlin’s Puttin’ on the Ritz, this monster of a musical is scientifically proven to be monstrously good entertainment.

With a book by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan, music and lyrics by Mel Brooks, orchestrations by Doug Besterman & Mark Cumberland, and original direction and choreography by Susan Stroman, Young Frankenstein promises to be an unmissable theatrical event.
